History:
The property consists of two buildings which were originally constructed in 1911 and 1927. The southerly building constructed in 1911, consisted of a 50 foot wide by 100 feet deep two story, brick building with retail space on the main level and an IOOF hall on the second level.
The northerly corner building, originally constructed in 1927, included a 50 foot wide by 100 feet deep, two story building with a small basement area. The Lewis County courthouse occupied the second floor, while the main floor, corner space was occupied by a bank.
In 1977-78, the property main floor was renovated into a single grocery store, with the exception of the old bank area, which now houses Ashley’s Hair and Nail Salon. A concrete block, 20 x 60 foot addition was made across the rear of the original building. The new addition included freezer, cooler and storage areas. The original county sheriff and jail area on the northwest corner of the building was retained for use as a break room.
